Angela's Ashes by Frank McCourt & filmed in Cork, Dublin, Limerick and Wicklow
Reading Frank McCourt's novel evoked images of how Limerick was years ago and I was able to compare it to today's Limerick - even taking a tour bus down the lane he grew up on. The imagery and life in Ireland was tough and the DVD helps capture the poverty and slums of Limerick before the war.
This movie starts in Brooklyn and ends back in Ireland which is quite unusual. You'll also see prejudice against Frankie's father who was born in the North, making it hard for him to find employment in the Republic despite having fought for the IRA. Sadly, when his father does find work -- he drinks it away, leaving the family penniless and hungry.
Have a box of tissues ready as this family will bring tears to your eyes many times.
